| VIMW will be held on the weekend of September 8-10, 2006. at Passages Oceanfront Resort, 8914 Clarkson Rd., Black Creek. Vancouver Island B.C. (on the same beach as the famous Miracle Beach, about 15 miles north of Courtenay on the old Island Highway) |
|
| It will start with dinner of soup and sandwiches at about 6:00pm on the Friday night. At about 8:00pm there will be a demonstration concert in the hall by the instructors who will “strut their stuff” and explain what they will teach in their classes. Ad hoc jamming will then start all over the resort until about 10:00pm when we’ll stop for gourmet snacks in the hall room. After that, jamming goes on until the wee hours but no jamming of any kind is permitted outdoors after 11:00pm by local ordinance. |
|
On Saturday morning a sign up sheet will be posted regarding the concert on Saturday night. If they choose to do so, students can put their names down to perform. They can sing solo or form groups according to their choice and ask our wonderful instructors to back them up (a not-to-be-forgotten experience). After breakfast the classes on the first subject chosen by the students start at 9:30 and go until 11:30. Classes will be held in the afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30 on the second subject chosen by the students. A two hour class on Sunday morning will complete the instruction started on Saturday morning and a two hour class on Sunday afternoon will complete the instruction started on Saturday afternoon.
After class on Saturday afternoon there is a rest period until 6:00 (usually jamming time unless you can resist it) when a dinner of gourmet food will be served and at 7:00 there will be the students’ concert. Concerts at GSGW, PSGW, Hornby Island and other camps have been wonderful experiences for both the student performers and the audiences and the one at VIMW undoubtedly will be the same. It is just not possible to find a more supportive and appreciative audience whether you’re a beginning or seasoned performer. After the concert, snacks are served in the hall and then there’s more jamming until the wee hours (all inside, please-tents on site do not qualify as “inside space”, of course).
No problem. Just go to another one. Your first choice does not mean you’re stuck with it. Obviously, this decision should be made as early as possible in the class as instructors will not be able to “back up” to accommodate late arrivals.
The accommodations are all in cabins on double and single beds (mostly double beds and some futons). There are very few rooms for couples and the fairly small size of the resort means that all sleeping spaces must be filled so please bring your sleeping bag. Some cabins will be designated for men and some for women. However, if you require privacy and do not like close quarters sleeping with others, we respectfully suggest you bring your tent. No noisemaking outside after 11:00pm, please. Because the resort is fairly small, it is very likely that many of the cabins will be used for jamming until the wee hours.
The cost for eight hours of group musical instruction, a fabulous concert, jamming until your fingers fall off or voice gives out, accommodation and gourmet food (six meals and two major snacks) is C$260 (US$234). The cost is the same whether you stay in a cabin or elect to bring your tent.
Bedding, towel, toiletries, swimsuit (the beach is right there), flashlight, (tent if you like tenting), raincoat and umbrella (just in case), instrument(s), spare strings, capo if necessary, pen, pencil and paper, a very good pair of ear plugs (if lots of sleep is high on your agenda because the jamming often goes on until the wee hours), and your body all rested up (we’re not kidding-you’ll need it well rested for sure when you come to VIMW) and ready to make music for hours on end.
We’re sorry but amplified instruments are not permitted at Vancouver Island Music Workshop with the exception of electric pianos (and those turned down low, please). This is because the “spill” of sound between teaching areas would disrupt classes been taught nearby.

Sorry, credit and debit cards are not accepted at this time. When we get your application form and cheque we’ll send you a receipt and directions to Passages Oceanfront Resort. We’re sorry but telephone reservations cannot be accepted as the only thing that secures a place at the workshop is a written application on the attached form accompanied by a cheque as noted above. When we receive your application and cheque, we’ll send you a receipt by email (or as a very last resort by snail mail) with directions to the camp.
Registrations will be accepted up to the date of the event. After the camp is full (we are edging up there at 14 July) we will keep a waiting list prioritized by postmark, as there sometimes are a few last minute cancelations that have to be filled. We'll hold your cheque and return it if you don't get in.
If you have concerns about getting in and whether or not to send an application, please phone or email us.
Cancellations received by 8 August 2006 will receive a refund in full. Those received by 23 August will receive a 50% refund, those received by 30 August 2006 will receive a 25% refund and after that no refund will be given.
