Archie Pateman

Banjo as a tool  (I/A)
Banjos aren't only useful in Bluegrass. In this class Archie will give insight to how a banjo can be used to enhance and add color to folk, country and original music. You'll learn unique roll patterns, effective use of the capo, and how to find the sweetest tone in your particular banjo; all while exploring an array of classic and contemporary songs. Something for everyone in this course so bring an open mind, your banjo, some finger picks and a capo.
Accompanying guitar (B/I)
In this class we'll be looking at how to accompany singing and instruments in a way that helps the song. Our focus will be on the subtle tricks that separate smooth back-up from distracting back-up in the genres of folk/country and bluegrass. We'll explore basic music theory, the use of the capo to change keys, some basic bass runs (into chords), basic finger picking and some different strum patterns..
